  FILMS AND VIDEO:

These are covered by copyright.

One of the key problems facing South Africa as a developing country is the small size of the local film industry. Government has tried to address this by insisting on more local content for television stations and supporting local film-makers financially.

Copyright in films and cinematography can be formally registered in order to make proof of authorship and other relevant factors easier to prove if a dispute arises. Registration is not however compulsory. Copyright in cinematography and films can be registered with CIPRO and will be listed in The Patent Journal.

Scriptwriters can submit a paper copy, computer disc, CD ROM or video tape of their script to the South Africa Script and Story Register for protection against artistic and design theft.
